Overview

Article metrics can be a useful way of understanding the impact and influence of an article. The “Metrics and citations” menu on the Sage Journals article page brings together a number of different measures to help support citation analysis.

What are the different ways to analyze Article Metrics and Citations?

The metrics provided by different services may differ because each is based on different sets of data sources depending on the main purpose of that particular service.

Web of Science

The Web of Science citation results display the number of times the article has been cited by other resources across all indexes in the Web of Science platform. The citation results figure for Web of Science is automatically updated daily.

For more information, to go the Web of Science Help Home page.

Crossref

The Crossref cited-by count displays the number of times the article has been cited by other resources registered on Crossref. The cited-by count is automatically changed shortly after new citations are processed and updated on the Crossref database. For more information, go to the Crossref Documentation page.

Scite

The Scite badge displays the number of times the article has been cited by other resources indexed by the service. The scite database contains 2b references, 1.2 billion citation statements, and metadata for over 180 million articles. For more information, go to the Scite Data and Services page.

Scite also uses a deep learning model to provide a classification for each citation. This classification gives additional context, indicating if the citation offers supporting or contrasting evidence or simply mentions the referenced work. The figures on the Scite badge are updated dynamically as new articles are processed by Scite. Scite is currently being piloted for a select number of titles on Sage Journals. For more information, go to the AI for Research Scite page

Altmetric

The Altmetric Attention score is an automatically calculated, weighted count of the attention an article has received from a variety of different online sources. The colors of the “donut” around the score represent the proportion of the article’s attention that comes from different sources. To find out more, to go The donut and Altmetric Attention Score webpage.

The Altmetric Attention score is updated in real time. For more information on the frequency of updates from the different data sources to go the Altmetric 'Attention sources update frequency and collection methods' support page.
